While it is commonly known that sunlight can induce the body to synthesize vitamin D (that is a simplification of a more complex process, but you get the idea), we are often asked if indoor tanning produces the same effect. The UVB present in sunlight triggers a chain of reactions in the body that causes the production of vitamin D. Since the body is exposed to UVB while tanning, then yes, indoor tanning has the same effect as sunlight regarding vitamin D. Production tapers off after short periods of UVB exposure, however, and sufficient vitamin D must come from other sources including our diets.
Science aside, most tanners will tell you they simply feel more energetic after tanning, and that’s all that matters!
